Head & Neck Surgery

Scope of ENT, Head & Neck surgical treatment has increased with advent of new techniques and equipment. A combination of myocutaneous flaps and prosthetic appliances has increased the survival rates and quality of life in patients with laryngeal – pharyngeal cancer (voice box, swallowing part of throat). Most important aspect is to identify the disease and to seek early biopsy confirmation. Video laryngoscopy provides accurate magnified details of the whole larynx and is most useful for detecting lesions in early stage. Tumour staging from I – IV is done to decide method of treatment. Depending on the stage only decision about surgery or radiation is taken. Early stage I & II are managed with surgery or radiation depending on site and advanced stage III, IV malignancy are managed with combination of surgery and radiation. Prosthetic voice restoration is done routinely here following laryngectomy. Most of the patients in our country with laryngeal – pharyngeal cancer seek medical treatment in the late stages. We have experience in performing more than 60 operations in patients with laryngo pharyngeal cancer especially late stage of stage III & IV. By restoration of speech following radical laryngectomy patients are more easily convinced to undergo curative treatment. We maintain a data bank and details – speciments from our old throat cancer patients to educate the new patients. 5 year survival using the combined treatment modality is 60% in stage IV laryngeal cancer.
